Hesseltje één van mijn reisgenoten is jong en Lesbisch. Haar Gay radar raakte meteen de eerste dag op tilt toen ze in de Oude Stad vlak voor de Ummayaden Moskee twee meisjes tegenkwam die niet alleen allebei hetzelfde uniform van stadswacht(?) droegen, maar ook nog innig hand in hand liepen. Om de indruk vast te houden heeft ze haar impressie meteen op papier vastgelegd. In het Midden Oosten wordt vaak geroepen: ‘Homosexualiteit bestaat niet!’ en ‘Gay zijn is een kwalijke uitvinding van het Westen!’ Maar alle vormen van LGBT bestaan natuurlijk in alle glorie. Alhoewel net even iets anders als bij ons. Vaak kiezen homo's voor de regiemes die ze kennen en met de beperkingen waarmee ze hebben leren om te gaan. Of de Arabische Lente ook een LGBT Lente wordt kan alleen de tijd leren.

A few days ago, my friends and I were waiting for a bus a little bit after midnight, when we were questioned by secret police; they checked our phones for videos or pictures, and they asked to check my laptop. Suspecting that we are gay, they made some offensive remarks about LGBT people trying to provoke a response.

Damascus is not safe anymore because of the secret police, not because of anything else. LGBT people have a lot more to be afraid of these days, especially that the secret police might threaten them to expose them as LGBT people if they “do not cooperate”.
