Het is bijna niet te geloven maar volgens Wikipedia is Sainaya het meest bezochte Christelijke pelgrimoord op Jerusalem na. Het stikt er in ieder geval van de kloosters. Dat komt omdat de Byzantijnse Keizer Justitianus hier maar liefst tweemaal Maria heeft gezien. Dat was in 547 AD waarna hij op de plek meteen een klooster liet bouwen. Het klooster van Onze Lieve Vrouwe van Saidnaya heeft binnen haar muren ook een icoon dat geschilderd schijnt te zijn door Lucas de Evangelist. Hij kon weliswaar niet schilderen, maar God stuurde zijn hand. De olie die uit de tieten van de Heilige Maagd komt heeft de kracht om Saidnaya tegen alle vormen van onheil te beschermen. Vreemde en niet zo vreemde veroveraars hebben Syrië door de tijd heen platgelegd, maar ze zijn van Saidnaya afgebleven. Toen ik het klooster bezocht was net de was gedaan. Mij viel op dat zelfs hier in deze vrome omgeving ‘leggings’ erg populair zijn en terwijl ik ze braaf zat te tekenen hing een non een kooitje met kanariepietje aan de muur om mij gezelschap te houden.
Er is toch wel iets heel bijzonders aan de gang in de wereld. Voor het eerst is een vrouw met een Lesbische agenda de spreekbuis voor een groep bestaande uit diverse hervormingsgezinde mensen in een land in opstand. Op 20 mei publiceerde Damascusgaygirl een lijst gericht met wensen die gericht is aan het regiem: 'I cannot speak for everyone in Syria but I can speak for what I want and what those I’m in touch with want. We want a government that doesn’t rule by force and fear but by the consent of the governed: we long to give that consent to our rulers. We want a government that is accountable and lives by law, where no one is above the law and the law is fair, where abuses of position are punished and where torture and unlawful detention are things of the past.

We want a Syria where the half of us who are women can progress. We want a Syria where what a woman wears is not an issue of state concern, whether she is covered or veiled or bareheaded should be between her and her God.
We want a Syria that is truly secular, where neither one religion dictates to the rest nor does a philosophy against religion reign.
We want a Syria where Christians, Druze, Jews, Muslims, Sunnis, Shia, Alawis, Catholics, Orthodox, Armenian, all are welcome to be a part of our nation. We want a Syria where the poison of sectarianism is gone.
