Wij hebben erg geboft met Ibrahim onze chauffeur. Niet alleen is hij een uitstekend chauffeur en een bron van verrassende informatie ook kwam geen enkele vraag ongelegen. Zelfs niet toen ik hem naar de poster vroeg van de stamboom der Profeten uit de Thora, Bijbel en Koran die we in de Al Firdaws Madrasa hadden gezien. Die poster moest toch ergens te krijgen zijn? Waarom zijn er niet bij iedere moskee winkeltjes waar religieuze boeken en posters te koop zijn zoals in Iran en Afghanistan? Hij nam mij mee op zoektocht door iedere soek van Aleppo tot we tenslotte in een klein zijstraatje een kantoorboekwinkel vonden waar ook religieuze teksten te koop aangeboden werden. Maar geen posters! Ibrahim vertrok geen spier toen ik opgewonden mijn ongenoegen kenbaar maakte tegen de eerbiedwaardig bebaarde winkelier. Ibrahim kon die avond terugkomen en misschien had hij de poster. Want natuurlijk wist de winkelier precies wat ik bedoelde. Inderdaad de volgende ochtend overhandigde Ibrahim trots een rol met voor ieder van ons een exemplaar om mee naar huis te nemen en nooit meer te vergeten wat ons bindt.

A few hundred yards further his mother yells back in a speaker that all is well. The few hundred yards separating them, is littered with landmines and therefore irreducible. Bayan is from the village on the Israeli side of the border, but studying in Damascus and therefore separated from his family. Ester Gould and Sabine Lubbe Bakker followed Bayan and his best friend Ezat in the year that they leave their homeland to study in Damascus. The nostalgia in their first year is universal, but this is compounded by the fact that they cannot return to their village on the Golan Heights. The film shows their inner struggles and offers a beautiful view of a forgotten aspect of the Middle Eastern conflict.
The directors will be present at the screening and participate in an interview after the screening.
